THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:  Dheseeya Malayala Vedi has submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy demanding to take immediate steps for the establishment of the proposed Malayalam University in Thiruvananthapuram. Vedi office-bearers Kazhakoottam Najmudeen, K Ramakrishna Pillai and A S Mujeeb Rahuman pointed out though the UDF Government had announced the establishment of the university, no action had been taken to implement it. They also said that the university should be in Thiruvananthapuram considering the contribution to the Malayalam language from the district. The UDF Government had made the announcement following the stiff pressure from the Malayalam language lovers from the capital city. There are moves from some quarters to establish the University in some other place. The memorandum submitted to Chief Minister substantiates the reason for selecting Thiruvananthapuram for the university. The first Malayalam book, Ramacharitham, was written from Thiruvananthapuram. Some of the points made by the vedi include - the Malayalam year was started by Venad kings, Bharatham Pattu and Ramayanam Pattu were written from Kovalam, the birthplaces of poets Ulloor and Ashan are in Thiruvananthapuram. After Independence, no University was established anywhere in Thiruvananthapuram district.
