CHENNAI: The BSNL workers alliance led by the National Federation of Telecom Employees-BSNL will hold a nationwide dharna and wear black badges on July 21, demanding action against the officers of the Chennai Telephones, who helped former telecom minister Dayanidhi Maran misuse 323 ISDN telecom connections for the commercial usage of Sun TV network for several months, causing a loss of at least Rs 440 crores to the financially-strapped BSNL. In a statement on Saturday, C K Mathivanan, deputy general secretary, National Federation of Telecom Employees BSNL said NFTE-BSNL wanted the Government of India to take immediate action to recover Rs 440 crores from the Sun network and handover the same to BSNL at the earliest. Action must be initiated based on the CBI report submitted to the central government in September 2007, regarding the illegal phone connections without any further delay, he added. The federation said the demonstration would urge the management to ensure supply of cables, drop wires and spare telephone instruments to facilitate quality service to the customers. The employees also opposed the voluntary retirement and compulsory retirement scheme and demanding that the outsourcing of works on a contract basis be stopped.
