The Lok Sabha was adjourned sine die on Friday, one sitting before the session was originally scheduled to end. The Rajya Sabha also concluded its proceedings sine die on the same day.

Originally set to end on August 12, the session was prematurely concluded by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, who adjourned the House for an indefinite period. Birla noted that the productivity of the House exceeded 130 percent.

During this session, several significant pieces of legislation were passed, including the Finance Bill, 2024, and the Appropriation Bill, 2024, both crucial for the Union budget. The Jammu and Kashmir Appropriation Bill, 2024, and the Indian Aircraft Bill, 2024, were among the four bills that also received approval.

The session saw the introduction of a Bill to amend the Wakf Act, 1995, which was referred to a joint parliamentary committee following protests from opposition members regarding its provisions.

Birla highlighted the session’s achievements, noting that the Lok Sabha held 15 sittings over a total of 115 hours. A notable focus was the general discussion on the Union Budget 2024-25, which engaged 181 members in a debate lasting 27 hours and 19 minutes. A total of 1,345 papers were presented, and the House heard 30 statements from ministers, including three suo motu statements under Rule 372.

Tense Exchange In Rajya Sabha

In the Rajya Sabha, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar adjourned the House sine die at 3:54 PM, following a day marred by an Opposition walkout. The Upper House was originally set to function until August 12. Dhankhar expressed concern over the conduct of Opposition members, both in and outside the chamber.

The day’s proceedings also included a confrontation between Dhankhar and actor-politician Jaya Bachchan, who objected to his “tone” during her speech. Dhankhar responded by asserting the need for all members, including celebrities, to adhere to parliamentary decorum.
