Hyderabad: A boat carrying about 70 people capsized in the Godavari river in Andhra Pradesh at about 0700 hrs IST on Saturday killing many.
Rescue and relief workers have managed to recover nine dead bodies till now and more casualties are feared. Rescue operations are still on.
Andhra Agriculture Minister Raghuveera Redd announced a compensation of Rs 1 lakh for the next of the kin of the dead.
"Nine people are dead and 25 have been rescued. Rs 1 lakh will be given as compensation to the next of those who have died," said Reddy.
Reports say the boat was packed with people beyond its capacity and the tragedy took place at Upputeru in Narsapuram mandal of West Godavari district.
Most of the people on the boat were pilgrims going to Lakshmi Narasimha Swami temple.
The temple, also known as Antarvedi temple, is situated in East Godavari district on the other side of the river.
