BELGAUM: The 18-member group of Kannada and Urdu corporators in the Belgaum City Corporation (BCC) have served an ultimatum to Mayor Manda Balekundri to make her stand clear on the proposal of according a civic reception to Jnanpith awardee Chandrashekhar Kambar on or before Tuesday evening. They announced that they will meet Chief Minister Sadananda Gowda and tender their resignations enmass in Bangalore on December 1 if the BCC headed by Balekundri refuses to felicitate Kambar. A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the members of the group held here on Monday. N B Nirwani, leader of the 18-member group, told media persons here on Monday that they will attend the council meeting scheduled on November 30 only if the Mayor announces the corporations’s stand and passes a resolution favouring a civic reception to Kambar. He also said that Mayor Manda should give the group the status of an Opposition group in the civic body.Nirwani opined that the government should initiate action only against Mayor Manda and her deputy Renu Killekar instead of opting to supersede the elected body. Only those who hurt the feelings of Kannadigas by their activities should be punished, not the innocent corporators, he said.Former deputy mayor Jyoti Bhavikatti said that the Mayor and Deputy Mayor should be dismissed so that their successors will not dare speak badly about Kannada and Karnataka. All the 18 corporators of the group were present at the news conference.
