New Delhi: Doctors at Lilavati hospital have confirmed in an official statement that Amitabh Bachchan is suffering from colitis or intestinal inflammation.
An official release by Lilavati hospital vice president, Narendra Trivedi, on Tuesday confirmed that the superstar is suffering from intestinal inflammation or colitis.
The condition was confirmed after a routine investigation of blood, urine, stool testss were conducted and CT scane was done on the abdomen.
Colitis (also known as colonitis) is an inflammation of the colon. It is a digestive disorder.
Bachchan was admitted to Delhi's Escorts Heart Institute after complaints of abdominal pain.
He was later discharged from there and taken to Mumbai's Lilavati hospital .
Incidentally, doctors at Lilavati hospital reveal that the pain is on the same side where he was hurt 23 years ago on the sets of Coolie.
However they have not made any correlation between the current problem and the past accident.
In 1982, during the filming of Coolie, Bachchan had had a near-fatal accident on the sets. He was hurt in the abdomen during a fight sequence with Puneet Issar.
Bachchan had been hospitalised for six months following the accident.
Trivedi says that Bachchan's condition is stable.
His doctors are tightlipped about the medicines, diet and treatment the superstar is being given.
Bachchan's family physician, Dr Jayant Barve, says he is optimistic about the superstar's recovery but that Bachchan will remain under observation for a while.
"He has been advised to take bed rest. However we are not going to discharge him today," says Dr Barve.
On Monday, after undergoing an eight-hour treatment at Escorts Heart Institute in New Delhi, Bachchan was discharged and flown to Mumbai.
After extensive check ups and tests in Delhi, Dr Naresh Trehan, Head of the Cardiology departmentat Escorts, had discharged him saying the pain was "nothing serious and just a normal irritation in the intestine."
Bachchan, 63, underwent an ECG, a CT scan, ultrasound test and a series of blood tests to ascertain the cause of the pain. He will be on medication for some time.
"The ECG and the CT scan were clear as are the Phonography and X-ray reports. We have given him some medicines and discharged him," said Dr Trehan.
His wife Jaya Bachchan, children Abhishek and Shweta and Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh accompanied him to Mumbai.
There was an abulance at the Mumbai airport, waiting to take Bachchan to Lilavati Hospital.
Also present at the airport were industrialist and good friend Anil Ambani or Reliance Industries and his wife Tina Ambani.
Bachchan's brother Ajitabh Bachchan came to visit his brother despite their recent fall out over a reveal all book that Ajitabh is writing on his brother.
