Amarjit Singh, also known as Bittu, the main accused in the murder of Nanakmatta Gurdwara’s Kar Seva head Baba Tarsem Singh, was shot dead in an encounter by the Uttarakhand STF and Haridwar police in the city’s Thana Bhagwanpur area in the early hours of Tuesday.
As per news agency ANI, Bittu’s second accomplice has fled and the STF and police are currently searching for him.
Uttarakhand DGP Abhinav Kumar told ANI that the state police had taken Baba’s murder as a challenge and the STF and police were constantly looking for both the killers. “The police will deal strictly with the criminals if they commit such heinous crimes in Uttarakhand,” he added.
The police also said that more than 16 cases are registered against Amarjit Singh alias Bittu.
On March 28, two bike-borne men shot at Nanakmatta Gurudwara Kar Sewa chief Baba Tarsem Singh inside his ‘dera’. Singh, who was critically injured in the incident, was taken to a hospital in Khatima where he was declared dead.
A media report quoted eyewitnesses as saying that the men on the motorcycle entered the dera’s open gates and opened fire at Tarsem Singh, who was seated on a chair inside.
Two days after the heinous crime, five people, including a retired IAS officer, was booked in connection with the killing.
