New Delhi:Flags flew at half-mast over the Sydney Harbour Bridge to pay tribute to Kerry Packer, the country's richest man who was known worldwide for his love of sport and gambling.

Hollywood actors Tom Cruise, Russell Crowe, and Prime Minister John Howard were among a host of celebrities who bid farewell to the late Australian media mogul at a memorial service at the Sydney Opera House.

Packer died on December 26 after a long battle with cancer and kidney failure.

He revolutionised cricket in the 1970's by introducing day-night cricket matches in coloured clothing.

Among the sportstars who attended the service were former Australian cricket captain Mark Taylor and Steve Waugh, current skipper Ricky Ponting, fast bowler Glenn McGrath, spinner Shane Warne .

The service included a rendition by school children and guests of "C'mon Aussie, c'mon, c'mon", the World Series Cricket theme song.

Police said they charged eight people who were protesting outside the Opera House because the memorial service was funded by Australian taxpayers.
