Sydney: Australian police on Thursday arrested a couple for the murder of Indian national Ranjodh Singh.
The married couple - a 23-year-old man and his 20-year-old wife - was arrested from Sydney's Sans Souci area in connection with Singh's death.
"Today we have arrested a married couple in connection with Ranjodh Singh's murder. They will be charged for Mr. Singh's murder," NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Mark Murdoch.
South Asia Times Editor Neeraj Nanda told CNN-IBN from Melbourne that Singh's murder was most probably because of a money dispute.
"The arrested couple knew Ranjodh for a long time. Ranjodh had to get some money from them or their associates and there was this tussle for that issue. The police press release says the incident took place at a party. Before going to the party they had gone to some local stores. Then they had a huge fight in the party and thereafter the incident took place. I think it is not a race related crime, as far was we know but it is not confirmed. The arrested couple belongs to Indian subcontinent," Nanda said.
Singh's partially burnt body was found by a passer-by on December 29, 2009 beside a road in the Australian city of Griffith.
Post-mortem examination revealed Singh's throat was slashed and he suffered multiple stab wounds
Police had to release photos of his ring, earring and iron bangle in a bid to identify him.
Another Indian Nitin Garg was stabbed and bled to death in Melbourne just a few days after Singh's murder.
There have been a spate of attacks on Indians in the past few months in Australia that has strained relations between the two countries.
External Affairs Minister SM Krishna has already warned Canberra that Indian students and tourists may avoid going to Australia if the attacks continue.
