Bethesda: Arjun Atwal continued to struggle this season as he opened with a five-over 76 in the AT&T National.
Starting out on the tenth, Atwal had as many as five bogeys, one double bogey and two birdies in his 76 that placed him 91st at the end of the first day at the Blue Course at the Congressional, which hosted the 2011 US Open won by Rory McIlroy.
Bo Van Pelt, who holed out from the fairway for an eagle on the first, which was his tenth hole of the day, carded four-under 67 on a day when only seven players managed a score in the 60s.
Bo led by a shot over Vijay Singh, Brendon de Jonge and Jimmy Walker, who bogeyed his final hole.
Nick Watney, the defending champion, was in the large group at 70, while Tiger Woods ended the day at one-over 72.
