BANGALORE: Degradation of forest and its land pattern and usage over the years has been one of the chief concerns worrying the Forest Department. Keeping this in mind, the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE), in coordination with state forest departments, will soon commence a project to reassess forest types and its characteristics. Speaking to Express, Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) Dr M H Swaminath, who has also been selected as the co-chairman of the reassessment team, said, “The decision to form the forest reassessment team was taken at a meeting held at Dehra Dun last week. As decided, the project will be for one-and-a-half years, which is expected to begin in the next couple of days.” The project is being chaired and headed by Director General of ICFRE V K Bahuguna, along with a co-chairman and eight nodal officers, which will also comprise the director of Institute of Wood Science and Technology (IWST), Bangalore; and director of Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding (IFGTB),Coimbatore.
