The diamond jubilee celebrations of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly would be conducted at the Assembly hall on October 29.
Recently, the Parliament celebrated its diamond jubilee and, in line with that, the celebrations for State Assembly was also being organised. Assembly Secretary A M P Jamaludeen said the celebrations would be held at the Assembly hall at 10 am on October 29. Sources said the celebrations would be held in a grand manner and national leaders and eminent Parliamentarians were likely to be invited for the event.
The State Assembly, in its chequered history, had witnessed some great leaders like C V Rajagopalachari, K Kamaraj, CN Annadurai, M Karunanidhi, M G Ramachandran and the present Chief Minister, J Jayalalithaa. A wide range of issues of importance to the State and the Nation were discussed in the House.
The Assembly hall, located in the British-era building Fort St. George that housed the present 234-member Assembly, also played host to the Legislative Council that had participation from many veterans.
The Council was abolished by MGR in the 1980s. The 2001-06 DMK regime tried to revive it but the effort met with a dead end after it lost power. The current Assembly has 151 AIADMK members (including the Speaker).
