An Assistant Sub-Inspector was brutally attacked here allegedly by liquor mafia and he succumbed to his injuries in a hospital on Wednesday, police said.
ASI Rajesh Meena was assaulted by criminals of liquor and drug mafia at the Rai Ka Bagh bus station on Friday night, when he had asked them to leave the place, police said.
Instead of leaving, they attacked Meena with barbed iron wire wrapped around a thick club and smashed his head badly, they said, adding that he was rushed to hospital immediately, where he was put on life-support system.
"He did not regain consciousness and succumbed to injuries Wednesday afternoon," a police official said.
Meena was cremated with state honours, he said, adding that a proposal is likely to be forwarded to the government to accord martyr status to the ASI.
"We have arrested two attackers so far and are in search of others," a police official said.
Senior police officials of the rank of DSP and ACP have also been attacked recently.
ACP Sunil Panwar had a close shave when some miscreants had fired on his vehicle two weeks ago near Benar on Jodhpur-Jaipur highway during night patrolling.
