The Arunachal Pradesh government on Thursday approved the state police’s proposal to transfer the murder case of former MLA Yumsen Matey, which occurred on December 16, to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
The case involved charges under sections 302/120B/506/34 IPC, R/w Sec 25 (1B) (a) and Sec 27 of Arms Act 1959, as well as Sec 10/13 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.
In a bid to ensure meticulous investigation of the case, the state government decided to involve the NIA. The Home Department of Arunachal Pradesh has also forwarded the case to the Ministry of Home Affairs on December 21, 2023, seeking necessary directions for the central agency’s intervention.
Likha Sampu, Deputy Secretary (Home) Govt. of Arunachal Pradesh, Itanagar, authorised this decisive action, highlighting the government’s commitment to pursuing justice in the brutal murder of the esteemed ex-MLA.
The former MLA was killed last week while attending a social event in Raho village of Tirap district by suspected militants from the banned outfit, NSCN (K-YA). In response to the killing of Yumsen Matey, huge rallies are being organised under the joint initiative of the Tirap Changlang Longding People’s Forum (TCLPF) and various other community-based organisations, Women’s Groups, Students Unions, trade bodies, GB Federation and PRI members at various locations of the district.
Notably, in 2009 Yumsem Matey as a Congress candidate secured victory from Khonsa West Assembly Constituency. He assumed the role of Parliamentary Secretary, overseeing significant portfolios such as the Department of Women and Social Welfare, Social Justice and Tribal Affairs, and the Department of Tirap, Changlang, and Longding (DOTCL).
Transitioning to a new political affiliation, Matey joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2015.
