Roti Habba is celebrated on the first day of Panchami and several folk songs are sung during the festival.

The festival of Nagara Panchami is celebrated with great pomp and joy in various parts of the country. In North Karnataka, this auspicious festival holds special significance. The occasion named Roti Habba is celebrated on the first day of Panchami. It is a special festival that brings families together and strengthens their bonds.

Several folk songs are sung during this festival which speak about the speciality of this occasion in North Karnataka. In the town of Ganagapura, people are presently getting ready for this festival with great enthusiasm. Various traditional dishes of North Karnataka are prepared, which include crispy jowar roti, sesame seed roti, millet roti, rice roti, pundi soppu (a type of leafy vegetable), chickpea curry, eggplant curry, different types of pulses, various vegetable curries, Kosambari (a type of salad), peanut balls, sesame balls, chickpea chutney, lentil chutney, spicy red chutney, and various kinds of native sweets.

The women of the houses prepare all these dishes. They then visit their neighbours and relatives to distribute the delicacies and spread love. This tradition of visiting each other’s homes and sharing the food is a unique custom of this festival. The entire family comes together on the first day of the five-day Panchami festival. On the second day of the Panchami, milk is poured over the Nagara stones to seek blessings. This is believed to be a very sacred practice among the people living in the area.

In urban areas, such relationship-strengthening festivals are gradually fading away, but in Ganagapura, these traditional festivals are celebrated with grad arrangements. These kinds of festivals enhance love, and trust, and strengthen relationships among the family members. People who stay away from their families return during this time to have good family time. This year the auspicious occasion of Nagara Panchami 2024 falls on August 9. People also organise special pujas to get rid of their life’s sufferings.
