New Delhi: In a shocking incident, an ailing 18-year-old girl and her mother were taken to an exorcist after their family suspected they were possessed by a ghost.
The daughter and the mother, 47, were allegedly beaten up mercilessly and force-fed animal dung by the exorcist after they were brought to him in Karnataka from Maharashtra's Latur district.
The incident emerged a day after two Gujarat ministers attended a function in Bhavnagar district where exorcists were present and one of them felicitated them.
Exorcists are known as ‘bhuvas’ in Gujarat. The function took place on Saturday.
However, this felicitation didn't go down well with social activists who saw this move as an encouragement to superstitious activities.
The activists in the state reacted sharply to the Ministers' move, alleging that exorcists who dupe villagers regularly are being sheltered by the government.
Martin Macwan, head of Navsarjan Trust, which has been working for Dalit rights, told CNN-News18, “This is horrific. More so because a minister of the government has felicitated these quacks and exorcists in full public view. The worst victims of these ‘bhuvas’ are Dalits, who get fleeced by these unscrupulous elements.”
