Soon after Facebook pulled down pages promoting pedophilia, activists have submitted a list of recommendations on tracking down such websites. To fight against such illegal activities, social activist Sunita Krishnan has started an online campaign named "Facebook stop supporting pedophiles" on change.org.
Within 24 hours of her initiating her campaign, Facebook contacted the activist and promised action. Her petition has already been signed by over 1000 people.
The recommendations include acting against such activities and appointing a vernacular reviewer to review content of any reported page. If found true, not only should the page be removed but the profile of the members should also be disabled.
It is also recommended that the offensive page should be declared as "page with pedophile content". The IP address of the admin should also be reported to local authorities/cyber cell as a mandatory Facebook policy. Facebook should act upon the complaint within 6-10 hours.
Activist fear that some Facebook community pages are becoming a heaven for paedophiles. Concerned by this alarming situation, Sunita started the campaign as most people who reported felt Facebook is not able to review the written content as it is able to only review the visual content.
The petition said that the community page looks innocent with pictures of children going to school or posing for a photograph, but the shocking part is the content of the comments. All the content is in a local language Malyalam, Tamil, etc and contains explicit sexual comments targeting the child's picture.
Recently, facing outrage by social media users, two Facebook pages in Tamil which were created to attract paedophiles were shut down. The two pages had pictures of young girls which attracted thousands of lewd and sexually explicit comments.
