On Wednesday, when Anna University regains its status as the sole affiliating technical university in Tamil Nadu, Professor P Kaliraj the senior-most faculty member in the institution, will assume charge as officiating Vice Chancellor.
Kaliraj is a professor at the Centre for Biotechnology in the Alagappa College of Technology.
His appointment was approved by the Higher Education Department as per the TN University Laws (Amendment and Repeal Act, 2011), which paved the way for merging the five Anna Universities of Technology in Chennai, Coimbatore, Tiruchy, Tirunelveli and Madurai with the parent university. The Higher Education Ministry has also appointed four senior faculty members as ad-hoc Regional Directors to coordinate the affairs of the university in Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchy and Tirunelveli.
“These directors will also take charge on Wednesday... For Chennai, we have not appointed a Regional Director since the Anna University can handle the job,” an official said.
Kaliraj will hold the fort till a permanent Vice Chancellor is appointed.
While Prof M Alagar of the Department of Chemical Engineering will be the Regional Director (in-charge) at Madurai, S Muttan of Electronics and Communication Department, K Sivakumar of Physics Department and V Sundareswaran of Mechanical Engineering Department will hold the fort in the other three regions.
