CHENNAI: If you ask any Stella Maris student where she spends her lunch hour, pat will come the reply, “Shirdi Quick Bites”. “We even have some old students of Stella coming back with their kids!” laughs Sushma Omprakash, the owner of the cosily tucked eatery in Prince Arcade on Cathedral Road. If you do manage to beat the corporate and college crowd during the peak lunch hours, there is no better place than Shirdi for a quick, yet filling and tasty lunch, which is also easy on the pocket. The most popular are the wholesome chapathi meals, but we begin with a snack — dahi samosa channa (`45). The spice of the samosa and channa is magically compensated with the chillness of the dahi, and it turns out to be a pleasant swirl of flavours in your mouth. We then decide to feast on gobi paratha (`45), as we face difficulty in choosing from a variety that includes panneer, methi and mooli paratha. The gobi paratha comes along with a bowl of channa masala and curd. As the paratha is generously filled with rightly seasoned gobi, we just eat it with pickle, but you can also choose either the panneer butter masala or gobi manchurian to go with it. Though tempted by the seemingly never-ending menu, we are stuffed. But dessert is a must. We order a mango lassi (`60), which is amply frothy and deliciously satisfying. You could also try the banana, pineapple or pomegranate lassi.Speaking of the never-ending menu, you could also go to Shirdi for breakfast or an evening snack. Their sandwiches look fresh and inviting. But don’t be misled by the prices. The portions of most dishes on the menu are usually enough for two. This 20-year-old restaurant is also popular for their oil-free chapathis, which are a favourite take-away dinner option for bachelors and families. They also do corporate catering.
