CHENNAI: Baba Ramdev's movement in New Delhi created a frenzy in far off Chennai too, as hundreds of people gathered at Dams Road, off arterial Anna Salai, for a daylong token fast on Saturday. Raising slogans, the crowd announced their wholehearted support to the movement against corruption led by yoga guru Baba Ramdev in Delhi. The Chennai event was organised by the Baba's Patanjali Yog Samiti and the Tamil Nadu chapter of Bharath Swabhiman Trust.
Many political parties and organisations, including the BJP, the RSS, Melmarvathur Adhiparasakthi, Akhil Vishwa Gayatri Pariwar and the Indhiya Jananayaka Katchi ( IJK ), a political party floated by SRM Group came forward to support the fast with their volunteers. The total number of people who turned up was close to 6,000 by noon.A big LCD screen beamed live television footage of Ramdev Baba's fast in Delhi. "We are all volunteering ourselves for the great cause of the nation that the yoga guru has taken up. We were given permission to conduct this fasting event only for one day from 10 am to 5 pm," revealed Santosh Lath, a patron of the Patanjali Yog Samiti Trust in Chennai. Both youngsters and the elderly were present in large numbers. "We are asking for a corruptionfree nation. Poverty will no more be a way of life if black money is brought back. Ninety nine per cent of this black money used during elections is of the denominations of 1,000 and 500. So we should stop using those currencies," said Rajehwari Prabhakarn, south India women's wing incharge of the Trust. Similar programs were conducted at 25 other places in Tamil Nadu.
