Balasore: Floods in Balasore district of northern Orissa have affected 4.25 lakh people.
Jalaka, a rivulet, has broken banks and swamped several areas, cutting off road links, especially after waters from the Sunai dam were released.
The flooded River Budhabalanga also added to the damage.
Four blocks of Basta, Jaleswar, Bhograi and Baliapal in Balasore district were the most hit as the waters seeped into 653 villages.
People cut open embankments near Basta and Dumuria at a few places to save their villages from the flooding.
The area, that received heavy rains throughout last night, was further flooded when waters seeped in from neighbouring West Bengal.
Two sections of Orissa Disaster Rapid Action Force have been deployed to help in rescue and relief operations.
Heavy flooding has affected nearly 20,000 hectares of crops.
Traffic on the Balasore-Basta-Jaleswar National Highway 60 has been also affected by the floodwaters.
District authorities have evacuated the some villagers to safe places and are providing them relief.
However many villages could not be reached due to the floods.
