4 Kolkata Police Stations Track Youth Who Threatened Suicide On Social Media

The Kolkata Police’s active intervention helped foil a suicide attempt mentioned on social media on Saturday.

Around 11 pm om Saturday, a follower sent a message on Kolkata Police. The link was to a screen recording of a Facebook Live, in which a 20-year-old was threatening to end his life. Police traced the account immediately, but couldn’t access it as it was locked.

On calling the person who had informed police, they learned that the youngster was his school friend, and is currently an undergraduate at the university. The informer knew his friend’s earlier phone number but not his current address.

Using technology, the police traced the number to an area in ​​Behala, but realising it would take more time to find the specific address, the information was sent to Parnasree Police Station (PS) Officer In-charge (OC) Inspector Satya Prakash Upadhyay.

News was also sent to Behala PS OC Inspector Animesh Haoladar. On his instruction, Sub-Inspectors Subhankar Das, Amaresh Naskar and Arun Bhattacharya began a thorough search in the ​​Behala PS area. On the other hand, Sub-Inspector Rajat Mondal began searching the Parnasree PS area.

The officers of Behala PS kept in constant touch with the informant, and Sarsuna PS was also informed.

As the young man’s name is a fairly common in Bengal, officers woke up other bewildered residents with the same name in the middle of the night. Apologising for the misunderstanding, they then rushed to the next possible address. Finally, the Behala PS team traced the youth’s address and current phone number in Parnasree.

Speaking to him, police came to know that he had decided to take the extreme step as he was upset about a few issues.

Speaking to News18, a Kolkata Police officer said, “It is a group effort. We got intimation from our control room and four thanas worked together.”

“The social media monitoring cell in Lalbazar has yielded good results. It saves people from fraud and even lives,” said Additional CP 1 Murli Dhar Sharma.

A day ago, the Kolkata police convinced a car owner to pull down a sticker which had an objectionable message towards women.
