PUDUCHERRY: Forty-eight hours was all it took for the police to crack the case of the three-day-old infant that had gone missing on Friday from the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER). A woman from Chennai and her partner were arrested by the police in this connection. The baby girl, said to be in the possession of  Sumitra, a resident of Chrompet in Chennai, was reunited with her parents on Sunday.Senior superintendent of police V J Chandran said the  police arrested Sumitra @ Fatima Kani (28) and Giridharaprasad (36). Sumitra, it was learnt, had plotted to steal the baby after she lost her child following a miscarriage. Giridharaprasad, who had helped her to whisk away the child, was reported to be Sumitra’s lover.The SSP said  the police got vital clues from a call made to the mobile of Perumal, driver of the taxi in which Sumitra along with the child was travelling to Chrompet in Chennai, on Friday night. The driver, after reading news reports about the stolen child, had alerted the police. The clues finally pointed to Third Cross Street, Thirumalai Nagar at Hastinapuram in Chrompet, Chennai, the residence of Sumitra. Both Sumitra and her partner were arrested.  The baby girl was born to Maheshwari of Ulundurpet in Villupuruam district, who had been admitted to JIPMER on July 5. Sumitra befriended Maheshwari saying that her sister had been admitted in another ward.Maheswari after telling Sumitra to look after the child went to perform one of her chores. When she returned, she found both the child and the woman missing. Sumitra traveled in Perumal’s taxi with the child to reach Chrompet on Friday. Maheshwari’s husband, Lakshmanan, filed a complaint at the D’Nagar police station regarding the disappearance of the child on Friday last.SSP V J Chandran congratulated the D-Nagar police team comprising superintendent of police A Nandagopal, inspector K L Viravallabane and sub-inspector Balamurugan for having cracked the case within 48 hours.
