The Raichur Thermal Power Station (RTPS) generated only 12 million units of power against its optimum capacity of generating 40 million units, here on Thursday as three of its eight units stopped working due to poor quality coal.
RTPS’s units 1, 2 and 3 had stopped generation for the last three days and its unit 8 has not been working since May 21. The authorities claim that they had to stop power generation in the first three units because of wet and slurry coal that was supplied from the mines. Unit 8 is not functioning due to a defect in the boiler that has not been restored yet.
However, sources said RTPS units have been running on oil as an alternative to the coal but due to paucity of funds the Karnataka Power Corporation is not in a position to purchase either coal or oil.
Power Minister Shobha Karandlaje inaugurated the solar energy unit at Yapaldinni on September 2 and the very next day the first three units of the RTPS stopped power generation. Currently RTPS is getting only one rake of the coal each day.
This would be sufficient to run only four units on low key basis. No supply of coal and oil to the station has made the authorities helpless
