27 farmers ended lives during UDF rule: RTI revelation

As many as 27 farmers have committed suicide in the state after the UDF Government came to power. Of these, 18 cases were reported in Wayanad, four in Kannur, three in Kasargode, two in Thrissur and one in Pathanamthitta district.

The government disclosed the figures in response to an application under the Right To Information(RTI) Act filed by Human Rights Defence Forum(DRDF) secretary Advocate D B Binu. The UDF government came to power in May 2011.

During 1999 to 2009, 958 farmers ended their lives. The number of farmers who took the extreme step was 40 in 1999, but in 2003, the numbers touched 314. The numbers  increased from 2001 to 2003, with 53 cases in 2000, 93 in 2001 and 106 in 2002 .

However, the numbers showed a declining trend since 2004, with 165 cases reported in that year, 186 in 2005, 112 in 2006, 68 in 2007, 22 in 2008 and one in 2009.

The RTI information also revealed that the financial relief announced by the state and Central governments has not reached the deserving hands.

Though announced four years ago, only four per cent of the amount allotted under the Kuttanad package has been spent so far. Binu alleged that the political parties and organisations which claimed to support the farmers have failed in their efforts.
