BANGALORE: Around 4000 engineers from more than a 100 research and development laboratories are expected to descend on the city between December 15 to 18 as the 26th Indian Engineering Congress (IEC) will kick off with the theme ‘Towards Prosperous India: Challenges for Engineers’. “Our aim is to make the ‘Made in India’ tag a hallmark of quality in the coming years,” said LV Muralikrishna Reddy, Chairman, IEC.The congress will have seven Memorial Lectures which includes the 54th Sir M Visvesvaraya Memorial Lecture. There will also be various panel discussions on energy and environment alongwith 465 technical presentations. “We are trying to mobilize participation of educational institutes and technical universities. Students will be given an opportunity to interact with subject experts,” said Dr Chandrashekar, Chairman, Indian Institute of Engineers, the organising body. The organisers on Saturday gave a small glimpse into the kind of technologies which would be on display in the Congress. The National Design Research Forum, the research wing of IIE, showcased fixed wing micro planes, quad propeller copters capable of vertical takeoff and hovering and a micro flight vehicle with wings that flap in flight. “These vehicles can be equipped with thermal, infra red and radar cameras for surveillance and other applications like wildlife tracking and monitoring of power line pylons,” said Krishna Venkatesh, COO of Drone Aerospace. The flight vehicles have an endurance of 40 minutes and are powered by Lithium Polymer batteries. The accompanying software has also been indigenously built and shows statistics like altitude, speed and is programmable for missions. The Congress also promises to have on display the latest simulation technologies from the Indian Army. Participants can get a first hand experience of how weapons simulators work. The Congress will be held at Palace Grounds and the inaugural session is on December 15. Interested participants can log on to www.iec2011.in for details of registration.
