200 huts gutted, old woman burnt alive

KAKINADA: An old woman was burnt alive and another woman received serious burns in a fire at Harbourpeta on Saturday afternoon.About 200 huts were destroyed in the fire, rendering 400 families homeless. The fire claimed the life of Bommidi Appayamma (75), wife of Nagulu. Vanamadi Mutyalamma who received serious burns, was admitted to Government General Hospital.Fire tenders from Sarpavaram, Kakinada,  Nagarjuna Fertilisers and Chemicals Limited and Coromandel factories rushed to Harbourpeta and extinguished the flames.The cause of fire is yet to be ascertained. Collector Neetu Kumari Prasad visited Harbourpeta and promised to provide aid to the fire victims. RDO GC Kishore Kumar, Rural Water Supply SE Nanda Rao, fisheries deputy director Krishna Murthi and Kakinada rural tahsildar Srinivas are overseeing relief and rehabilitation measures.
