A 44-year-old fisherman, G Antony Swamy, was killed in police firing when he, along with a group of fishermen, allegedly attempted to attack police at a temporary check-post near Kulasekarapattinam here on Monday.
Antony Swamy of Manapadi, a costal village located nearly 50 km from Thoothukudi, had attempted to attack police posted at the check post. In retaliation, inspector Sivakumar opened fire, claimed a police source. Meanwhile, when the news about the police action on the protestors at KKNPP reached the neighbouring districts, thousands of fishermen from here staged a protest condemning the incident. Those in the coastal areas did not venture into the sea stating that they would not go fishing unless the government stalled the KKNPP project. Protesting fishermen from Kanyakumari and adjoining hamlets also struck work.
The fishermen also locked four police personnel, including a woman SI, inside a room near the Thoothukudi-Tirunelveli border. After senior police officers pacified them, they set them free.
Similarly, the protestors staged a rail roko at Thoothukudi in the evening and damaged the glass doors of Mysore Express. They disrupted train services for a few hours, which was resumed only after 7 pm. Thousands gathered at the Our Lady of Snows Church condemning the police action and offered prayers. The fishermen also blocked the Beach Road in Thoothukudi town.
