James Gunn has offered a few breathtaking glimpses of the Norwegian archipelago Svalbard where he is currently directing his upcoming film Superman. The film starring David Corenswet in the titular role is set to premiere on the big screens on July 11, 2025. Reportedly, James Gunn wanted to shoot the first scene in Svalbard. However, he did not reveal how many scenes he plans on filming at the destination. Recently, the director took his Instagram followers on a virtual tour in Svalbard. He dropped a string of videos on the platform from a helicopter treating the masses to the snowy landscapes.
“Svalbard on my iPhone by helicopter,” captioned James Gunn. The videos captured the snow-capped mountains and snow-sheathed terrains of Svalbard. The contrasting crimson and yellow colours of the sky painted a beautiful picture. Winding through the narrow gaps of the mountains, Gunn showed a closer look at the Norwegian land. Everywhere the eyes went, there was only snow and nothing else. One of the frames captured a silent stream with icebergs floating inside as the helicopter steered close to the water body.

As soon as the post surfaced on the internet, social media users were amazed to witness the stunning visuals and reacted to the post. “No CGI. This is CINEMA,” pointed out one individual. “This movie going to be the BEST Superman movie. I can see it,” expressed another confidently. “This is an amazing and beautiful landscape. Can’t wait to see Superman flying through the skies,” commented a third DC lover.
Not long ago, James Gunn shared another picture from Svalbard, featuring producer Peter Safran. The duo were dressed in black puffer jackets and posed against the background of a snowy field.

Earlier, in an interaction with a Norwegian outlet, James Gunn spilled the beans on why he chose Svalbard to shoot for Superman. “We have filmed the first scenes (in Svalbard), which show Superman fleeing to the Fortress of Solitude. We wanted a place that was beautiful and felt like being in the middle of the Arctic… First, there is the natural beauty. But there’s also the fact that you’ll find a varied landscape here that you won’t find anywhere else. Nature gives a special feeling,” he said, as reported by Deadline.
Besides David Corenswet, Superman also stars Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, María Gabriela, Isabel Merced, and Skyler Gisondo.
