Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon are contemplating a third season of Big Little Lies, citing the timing as opportune for revisiting the popular series. In a recent interview with Elle, Kidman, who also serves as an executive producer, discussed how she and Witherspoon have been exploring ideas for another season. Kidman emphasized the intricate narratives of the characters, particularly as they grapple with the complexities of motherhood and the passage of time. Although no official agreements have been made, sources close to the series revealed to The Hollywood Reporter in January that both actresses are keen on the prospect of returning to the show.
One of the main challenges, however, is coordinating the schedules of the original cast including Witherspoon and Kidman, who are both involved in other projects. Despite these challenges, Kidman mentioned the strong bond between the cast members, which makes the prospect of filming another season easier. “I think when you’re all scattered and never sort of cross paths, it’s very, very different,” she said. “But when you’re all still very intertwined, that’s what makes it doable, because there’s a willingness, and you want to spend time together,” the actress explained.
She also revealed that her daughter was a driving force behind her decision to consider a third season, citing her daughter’s keen interest in the characters’ storylines. “My daughter is the one who watched both of the seasons and went, ‘OK, there’s just no question, there has to be a third. She’s like, ‘Celeste, she’s not coping in the second one, what is she doing? I could kind of see the point of view of Mary Louise,'” she told The Hollywood Reporter.
In addition to discussing Big Little Lies, Kidman also talked about her viral AMC Theatres commercial from September 2021, which became a popular meme during the COVID-19 pandemic. Kidman expressed delight in seeing the various ways people have parodied the commercial, particularly by drag queens, and expressed a desire to one day perform. “My dream will be to be onstage doing it with a drag queen,” she said. “I’ve got to be able to do that at some point.”
Big Little Lies, which also stars Shailene Woodley, Zoe Kravitz, Laura Dern, Adam Scott, and Kathryn Newton, among others has garnered critical acclaim and a dedicated fanbase since its debut. With the potential for a third season, fans will have to wait and see if the highly anticipated continuation of the series becomes a reality.
