London: Liverpool was the big casualty on the Premier League's opening day, losing 3-0 at West Bromwich Albion on Saturday at the Hawthorns, with Daniel Agger seeing red for the visitors.
Liverpool replaced Kenny Dalglish with Brendan Rodgers in the offseason but there was no sign the one-time giant of English football will improve on last season's eighth-place finish.
Zoltan Gera put West Brom in front before the break, Peter Odemwingie netted from the spot after the break and Romelu Lukaku completed the win.
Liverpool were the better of the two teams in the first half but fell behind late in the first period as Zoltan Gera fired a sensational half-volley into the top far corner just before the half-time.
The second half followed a similar pattern and although Pepe Reina saved a Shane Long penalty, he could not stop Peter Odemwingie's spot-kick or Romelu Lukaku's late header as Brendan Rodgers endured a miserable start to his tenure.
Away team continued to press for late goals, even introducing Andy Carroll, but they could not find the net.
