New Delhi: Due to Andrei Arshavin's earlier exploits in the Champions League with former club Zenit St Petersburg, he is cup-tied for the rest of the competition, and even though he now plays for Arsenal, he will be unable to represent them against AS Roma and beyond.
Arsene Wenger though is at ends over why Arshavin cannot play for Arsenal as, he claims, Zenit are no longer in the tournament.
"Yes (I am frustrated that Arshavin cannot play). He played in a team that is out of the competition," the Frenchman said on Monday at his pre-match press conference.
"The logic is not really obvious. If he can play in the League and FA Cup, why not be qualified in the Champions League? But it’s the rules and you cannot complain because we knew the rule when we bought him. We cannot complain about that," he conceded.
"The logic is not obvious because he has played for a team that cannot play any more in the Champions League," he added.
Arshavin was signed by the Gunners right on the edge of deadline day in one of the most protracted transfer sagas in the history of winter window deals. He made his first team debut last weekend against Sunderland and was subbed after 63 minutes.
