New Delhi: Rafael Benitez has described the current transfer market as 'crazy', while warning the richer clubs that money does not buy success.
Liverpool paid £17million for Glen Johnson, and are also trying to fend off large bids for Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano.
Speaking to the BBC, Benitez said, "The market is now crazy. It is all money, money, money now. We had to pay big money. But we were signing a good player, an England player (Johnson), and that is very positive."
Benitez then elaborated on how difficult it was to compete in the current market, continuing, "Things have changed.
"You have to adapt to a situation. Manchester City and big clubs in Europe are spending big money, so the market has changed and we have to work harder.
"City have signed a lot of good players, but that is no guarantee they will win anything."
Benitez lost out on another one of his targets, Gareth Barry, when the midfielder chose to move to the richer pastures of Eastlands. However, the Liverpool boss stressed that success could not be easily bought.
"It will be interesting to see what happens next season," he said.
"If you spend big it is always easier to perform well. But when you have a good understanding between players, that is also important.
"If they are together, they work hard, that is just as important."
