AC Milan's road to the final began after they topped Group H in which the other teams were Lille, AEK and Anderlecht. in the pre-quarters they got the better of Celtic drawing 0-0 the away game and winning 1-0 at home.
They then got the better of Bayern Münich in the quarter-finals (2-2, 2-0). The Italian club advanced to Athens thanks to a 5-3 aggregate victory over Manchester United in the semi-finals.
After losing 3-2 in the first-leg, Milan found the perfect response at San Siro as they won through goals from Kaka, Seedorf and Gilardino.
