New Delhi: New Los Blancos president, Vicente Boluda has given his first in-depth interview and there were no shortage of controversial statements.
Real Madrid’s Acting President, Vicente Boluda spoke to radio station Cadena SER on Monday night following his team’s 3-1 victory over Osasuna on Sunday.
The former vice-president, who took over the hot-seat in the Bernabeu boardroom from Ramon Calderon last week, touched on numerous subjects, starting with his predecessor and his controversial resignation.
"(Last) Thursday night, Calderon decided that he was not going to quit, and that he would continue his presidency until the elections," he clarified on the programme, ‘El Laguero’.
"There were a number of board directors who agreed with his decision, but there were also others who disagreed. However, he had unanimous support at all times.
"In my opinion, I believe that he made the right decision to step down, for his own well-being and for the interest of the club."
"I want to make it clear that Calderon’s resignation was an act of bravery, not one of cowardice. He sacrificed his personal prestige without being guilty of anything," he stressed.
Boluda then went on to confirm that there will be elections in June and that so far, only Juan Villalonga has contacted him to express his interest in the candidacy.
Talk then shifted to footballing matters on the pitch when he was asked if Arjen Robben is better than Barcelona’s Lionel Messi.
"It’s clear that Robben is more electrifying than Messi. For me, he’s a more entertaining player anyway and my opinion on that will never change."
While that statement will endear him to the Los Blancos faithful, his next declaration might not.
"Now, it is not necessary to sign new players or sell any of ours. But (sporting director) Predrag Mijatovic is an ex-player who knows a lot about football and he can certainly help us. If he decides we need to buy new players, then it will be his thing," he concluded.
