Manchester: Manchester United have lured a defensive prospect from Manchester City, with Frederic Veseli switching between the fierce rivals on transfer deadline day on Tuesday.
Veseli failed to make a competitive senior appearance for Roberto Mancini's side and moves to Old Trafford with his City contract set to expire in the summer.
The 19-year-old Swiss centreback will initially have to impress in United's reserve side to earn a spot in the first team.
Veseli, a composed and technically gifted defender, said: "I am very happy and it is an honour to sign for Manchester United. I can’t wait to get started, to work hard and do everything I can to help the team. I am looking forward to showing everybody what I can do on the pitch."
"I am very thankful to [manager] Sir Alex Ferguson for bringing me to such a great club."
"Manchester United have a long history of younger players coming through and hopefully I can follow and do the same."
Veseli captained Switzerland to victory in the Under-17 World Cup in 2009 and was part of the City senior squad which toured the United States last summer, but failed to establish himself in the City first-team.
United sold 18-year-old midfielder Ravel Morrison to West Ham on Tuesday after a series of disciplinary issues, for a fee of £1 million on a three-and-a half-year deal.
Sir Alex insists he is "better out of Manchester."
Speaking to MUTV, Ferguson said: "The case with Ravel is well-documented, I think he’s better out of Manchester, to be honest with you. He’s got a great talent, but having to deal with that is very important."
Despite the Red Devils turning down a bid from Newcastle United earlier in the transfer window, Morrison has been allowed to leave to join Sam Allardyce's side, and the highly-rated midfielder is eyeing promotion from the Championship as his primary goal.
He told the club's official website: "I'm really pleased to have signed. The move has happened very quickly and I'm looking forward to hopefully moving up to the Premier League with West Ham soon. I'm an attacking player and I'm hoping to get the fans on their feet."
"I met with Sam Allardyce this morning and he welcomed me to the club. I also played with Robert Hall in the England team and I know him well, so that will be really helpful to have someone here that I know."
Morrison made his debut for United in the League Cup win over Wolves back in October 2010 as a 17-year-old and went on to make just two more appearances for the senior side, both in the same competition this season.
