Manchester: Roberto Mancini hopes Manchester City can complete the signing of Atletico Madrid striker Sergio Aguero this week.
The Italian had made his interest in the forward known after Carlos Tevez revealed his desire to leave the club.
And despite Tevez's move to Corinthians failing to materialise, Mancini hopes Aguero, who says he wants to leave Atletico, can become City's latest summer signing.
"I don't know at the moment. The last news that I heard about Aguero was that the club was talking with Atletico Madrid [before the weekend]," Mancini said.
"I think that maybe in four or five days, before the next game, I think that in this week maybe we can close. Maybe."
He added: "Aguero played in Copa America. If we close the deal, I need to speak with him, because I want to know his opinion [of playing in Manchester]."
Mancini has not been able to get in touch with Tevez since he joined up with Argentina for the Copa America, but he expects his striker to return to face Manchester United in the Community Shield on August 7.
"When he comes back and his condition is good, maybe he can have a chance," said Mancini. "He has played in Copa America. And two weeks they [players] can’t lose their condition. After one week, if they work only one week, he can find his condition."
Despite Tevez publicly announcing he wants to leave City for family reasons, midfielder James Milner would be happy for his team-mate to stay at the club this summer.
"There’s world-class players all over the field, all over the squad," said Milner. "We're going to be playing a lot of games again this year. We did last year. You know, that's what we want, competition all over the park."
