Inter Miam's Luis Suarez matched the feat of Lionel Messi of winning his third MLS Player of the Match award this season.

The iconic duo of Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez have notched yet another record in the Major League Soccer (MLS). Despite, Messi not kicking a ball in weeks he continues to make history in the United States. Before his injury in the Copa America 2024, Messi had already claimed three Player of the Match awards. Recently, Luis Suarez scored a brace to help Inter Miami beat Cincinnati in the MLS to earn his third Player of the Match award this season. The duo’s accomplishments this season have now made Inter Miami the only team in MLS history to have two players win the Player of the Match accolade at least three times in a single season.

Luis Suarez was a force to be reckoned with during their fixture at the Chase Stadium on August 25. The Uruguayan found an early lead, scoring within just 35 seconds of play. Within five minutes of taking the lead, Suarez added another goal to make it 2-0 for the hosts. During the game, Inter Miami found themselves on the back foot after conceding a red card in the 42nd minute. But the departure of Tomas Aviles did not affect Inter Miami's defence as they secured a comfortable clean sheet. Suarez’s heroics have now put Inter Miami eight points clear of the second-placed Cincinnati in the Eastern Conference this season.

Since Lionel Messi’s absence from club football, Luis Suarez has constantly stepped up for Inter Miami in the MLS. He has now joined Messi and Real Salt Lake’s Cristian Arango as the only three players to win the Player of the Match award thrice this season. Messi was in attendance to see his teammate seal a victory. The Argentine was in the company of NFL legend Tom Brady and Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham.

Speaking of Lionel Messi, the Argentine legend is still in recovery after his injury against Colombia on July 15. Despite losing their captain, Argentina were able to complete a successful title defence, courtesy of a goal from Lautaro Martinez. As for Messi’s return, the FIFA World Cup winner is not expected to be back until the end of the regular season on October 19. But Messi may feature in the playoff stage for Inter Miami a week after that.
