Real Madrid target David de Gea has been in fine form for Manchester United for the past two seasons and has been one of the biggest factors helping the club regain a Champions League slot this season but his future has been in big doubt at Old Trafford.
It is understood that behind-the-scenes talks have been taking place between De Gea's agents and La Liga club officials for several months as Real are weighing up a summer move for the goalkeeper.
And former Manchester United midfielder Quinton Fortune insists that United would be powerless if Real Madrid were to come calling, but it will be a hard decision for the Spaniard as United, like Real, is one of the biggest clubs as well.
Talking to IBNLive Sports at the UNITED LIVE event in New Delhi, the former Red Devil said, "There will always be speculations but he is having such a fantastic season. He has been probably our (Manchester United) best player and has helped them save so many games. But if a club like Real Madrid comes and considering he is a Spaniard - he will find it tough to turn them down.
"Many top players in the past have moved away from United - but the club carries on. No one wants De Gea to leave and I hope he stays at old Trafford for many more years to come and become a great goalkeeper, but it is always difficult to turn down 10 times Champions League winners," he added.
The situation, however, remains anything but clear-cut and much still depends on the form of Iker Casillas. The Spanish goalkeeper remains a powerful voice in the Real dressing room and he has improved in the second half of the season after a troublesome 2014.
When asked about how Louis van Gaal has helped United in comparison to last season under David Moyes, Fortune was pretty satisfied by the way United have improved under the Dutchman this season and is hoping that he delivers with the EPL title next season.
"Qualifying for the Champions League was the target this season and LVG has said that a number of times in the past, and they have achieved their goal. It has been a huge change since last season and the way of football has also changed under him," Fortune said.
"Fans at Old Trafford are not used to see slow and patient football but that's the Van Gaal way - that's his philosophy. But the most important thing, whatever the style of play, is the results. They have achieved this season's target - next year they should go for the EPL title," he said.
