Sao Paulo: Former Brazil leftback Roberto Carlos says he will retire from football by the end of the year.
The 38-year-old Roberto Carlos has a contract with Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala until 2013, but said he will stop playing either in June or in December of 2012 and will instead focus solely on his coaching role.
He told Brazil's GloboEsporte.com on Monday that he intends to continue "helping" the Russian club off the field after retiring. He also insisted that he would not reverse his decision.
Roberto Carlos played for Brazil until the 2006 World Cup. He helped the national team win the 2002 tournament in South Korea and Japan. He also was a starter when Brazil were runners-up in 1998.
The Brazilian began his illustrious playing career with Uniao Sao Joao but it was with Palmeiras that he made his name and he secured a move to Inter in 1995. The defender only spent one season at San Siro, though, before moving to Spain. He thrived with Real Madrid from 1996 until 2007 and also played for Fenerbahce. He made 370 league appearances for Los Blancos, scoring 47 goals, before leaving for the Turkish side in 2007.
Roberto Carlos returned home in 2010 to link up with Corinthians before taking up the opportunity to join Anzhi last year.
