Manchester: Wayne Rooney has admitted that winning a record 19th league title with Manchester United is more special to him because he is a boyhood Everton supporter.
Rooney, who scored the penalty which took the Premier League trophy back to Old Trafford, came through the Everton academy where he made his name.
And having played for Liverpool's two biggest rivals through his career, he believes surpassing their number of league titles means more to him than if he hadn't.
Asked after the match whether overtaking Liverpool's record made the 19th title more special, he said: "Of course, for me personally being an Everton fan, to win the Premier League 19 times, for the whole team, for the fans, the whole club, it's a great feeling for us.
"Winning the Premier League is an incredible feeling, to get that 19th title, most successful English team to win the Premier League, it’s a great feeling for all of us."
It has been a remarkable season for Rooney. A poor run of form for the first-half of the campaign was made worse by handing in a transfer request and the possibility that he could join one of United's biggest rivals.
However, a spectacular over-head kick against Manchester City sparked a revival in form and since then he has starred in United's good run towards the end of the season which saw them pip Chelsea to the title.
Rooney, though, was just relived that he was able to help his team-mates secure the point that they needed to clinch the title.
"I've had my ups and downs, but that penalty was great for the team and helped us to win the league.
"It took a long time for the ref to give it. I just had to compose myself, I knew where it was going, I've been practicing all week in training and thankfully I managed to score."
