The trailer of Raj Kundra’s UT 69 was unveiled today. Touted to be his biopic, it marks the businessman’s acting debut and traces his journey in a prison where he spent about two months in 2021. The trailer has no reference to his infamous pornographic case. For the unversed, however, back in July 2021, Shilpa Shetty’s husband was arrested and named as a key accused in a pornographic films case. He was in judicial custody and was released on bail in September that year.
At the trailer launch of UT 69, Raj exclusively told News18 about how his wife, Shilpa, reacted when he first expressed his desire of making a film on himself. “She was a few feet away from me when I decided to tell her that I am making a film. I didn’t want to go too close to her (laughs), he said.
Shilpa’s initial reaction wasn’t too pleasant, revealed Raj to us. “I told her that I have a script and was waiting for her answer. When I turned away from her, a flying chappal came at my face. I think she thought that the idea was a little dicey first. Maybe she thought that the film wouldn’t get made.” Raj further added, “Then I told Shahnawaz (Ali, director) to go and explain it to her. He gave her a very small narration. She thought about it and realised that it wasn’t about the case of against the system in any way. She felt it was a very human story.”
Shilpa was also apprehensive about Raj making his acting debut with the film. But she was eventually convinced. “She was very supportive. She asked me, ‘Tu acting kar lega?’ I told her that I will be able to since I have done some method acting by going to jail,” shared Raj.
Speaking about how her feedback means everything to him, Raj continued, “She is very sweet. She has supported me in everything I have done and has faith in me. We’re best friends. If best friends can’t talk to each other or communicate, then we shouldn’t be in a marriage.”
When asked about her reaction after watching UT 69, Raj got emotional and said, “She has watched the film and is very proud of me. That’s my win.”
Lauding her further at the event, Raj addressed the press and told, “She is my Rock of Gibraltar. Had she not been there, I wouldn’t have survived inside the jail. I was ready to finish everything inside. She gave me faith and hope and said, ‘Come out, we will solve this out.’ Those 63 days were the hardest days of my life and I hope nobody goes through what I did. I would like to thank Shilpa for everything. She means the world to me. And like it’s said, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.”
UT 69 is all set to hit the big screen on November 3.
