Actor Shagun Mishra is making her acting debut with Annu Kapoor’s Hamare Baarah. Releasing on June 14, the film has been making headlines for various reasons. It has been accused of spreading propaganda by a section of the society. Not just this, the film has also been banned in Karnataka to protect “communal harmony”.
In a recent interaction with News18 Showsha, Shagun opened up about the controversy around the film and clarified that its aim is not to target anybody. “Kuch toh log kahenge, logon ka kaam hai kehna. I think this summarises it all. I’d just say, through this movie, we’re just trying to give a positive message to the people and we’ve not targeted any specific community intentionally,” she told us.
“Every religion is great in itself and we should respect that. Also, I think that nationality should come first before any religion. So if a movie is trying to give a reforming message to society, we should look into the bigger picture. I think, a revolution is needed now to change the society’s thinking for women, and women should be seen and heard parallel to men,” Shagun added.
She called the film’s ban in Karnataka “sick” and urged people to trust the censor board. “It’s been said that the communal harmony will be destroyed if this movie is released in Karnataka. I just have to say one thing, don’t you trust the sensor board certificate? I mean, how sick is that! And I feel it’s really a need of people in Karnataka to watch this movie because it is made to change the mindset of people who think we’re trying to destroy communal harmony. And now, even the High Court has permitted to release of the film so I don’t think the movie’s release in Karnataka should be banned. People should use their education, think logically about things, and respect the sensor board, that’s all I can say,” she said.
Shagun requested everyone to watch the film first to judge it and added, “We say don’t judge a book by its cover. The trailer that people have watched till now is just the cover of the book. It’s not the whole story. So it’s my sincere request to the audience to judge it or comment on it after you watch the whole film and I’m sure that the people who are creating hate and criticizing will be the only people who will apologize for their hate and all the hate shall convert into love after people watch the film, I’m really hopeful. And this movie shall definitely make a change in the society, I’m sure of it.”
