Thank You For Coming might have had a lukewarm response at the box office but Bhumi Pednekar has been basking in all the love that’s coming her way for the film themed on sisterhood, self-discovery, finding love and sexual pleasure. In what is being termed as a bold film, in its climax, Bhumi’s character Kanika Kapoor experiences an orgasm for the first time. While this isn’t the first time that a woman is seen pleasuring herself in a film (Swara Bhasker in Veere Di Wedding, Kiara Advani and Neha Dhupia in Lust Stories and Tillotama Shome in Lust Stories 2), it has won Bhumi and the maker Karan Boolani praises for its aesthetic quotient.
Speaking about it, Bhumi exclusively tells News18 Showsha, “I think the orgasm scene was shot so beautifully. Karan told me that it would only be my face.” However, she’s quick to add, “My character wasn’t chasing an orgasm, she was chasing love. She blames herself not for not being able to find love and meeting weirdos. She felt incomplete. We always blame ourselves because we’re constantly made to feel like we aren’t good enough and that something is missing in us and not the boys.”
Thank You For Coming also saw Bhumi attempting a courageous move in a scene where she bares it all as she looks at herself in a mirror. Talking about how she had no apprehension while shooting for it, she says, “I didn’t think it through. For some reason, I’ve a lot of faith in our audience and in the fans I’ve gained. Even if you see that scene closely, you won’t be able to see anything. It was a silhouette and I was fully clothed when I did that scene. That’s where the aesthetic of the filmmaker comes in. Karan told me that it was a silhouette shot.”
Known to be vocal about body positivity and body image issues, Bhumi feels like it was a rather brave moment that defied all notions pertaining to unrealistic beauty standards. “You can see a little bit of my stomach popping out. So, it wasn’t like you had a girl with the perfect figure standing. And I thought that was beautiful,” she states.
For the Govinda Naam Mera (2022) and Shubh Mangal Saavdhan (2017) actor, perfection is overrated. Sharing her thoughts on the same, she remarks, “All of us are perfect but we may not be perfect by the standards of the society. It’s these small things that the film wanted to celebrate. That’s why I was very comfortable. I knew that people wouldn’t see it in a cheap way. I really trusted Karan so much and I still do.”
Looking forward to throwing a success bash with the team of Thank You For Coming soon, Bhumi adds, “I’m going to have a party soon to celebrate Thank You For Coming. I just have to get the dates of all the girls, who have now gone back to Delhi. Kusha (Kapila) and Shehnaaz (Gill) are here. Shibani (Bedi) and Dolly (Singh) are back home. Shibani should be back soon.”
