The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) has made some big changes in the Higher Secondary curriculum which will come into effect this year and will be applicable for those students who will register from the 2024-25 academic session. While some subjects have been discontinued due to the lower number of students registering for them, some new subjects have been introduced and the marks structure of music and visual arts, health, and physical education have been revised.
As per the official notice, subjects like Punjabi, Gujarati, and French have been discontinued from this year onwards, due to less number of students enrolling in the subject. However, some new multiple vocational subjects have been added like Banking Financial Services and Insurance, Food Processing, and Telecom. Adding to it some new subjects like Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security, and Science of Well-being have been introduced as a part of West Bengal’s HS curriculum change.
Apart from them, the Council has also changed the name and code of several subjects. The Home Management and Family Resource (HMFR) is now changed to Human Development and Resource Management (HDRM), Agronomy (AGNM) is changed to Agriculture (AGRI), and Health and Physical Education name is going to be the same, but the subject code has been changed from PHED to HPED.
As per the revised marks structure, the theory component of Health and Family Education has been increased from 40 to 70, and 30 per cent of the weightage is for practical components. As for Music and visual arts, the theory and practical marks will have a weightage of 50 marks each.
Recently, it was announced that WBCHSE will be conducting exams semester-wise for Class 11 instead of conducting them annually from the 2024-25 academic session.
From the 2025-25 academic session, a similar change will be brought in for Class 12 exams.
The official statement reads, “The School Education Department, Govt. of WB has given us the permission vide memo no. 340-SED-‘11099/312/2023 dated 06.03.2024 to introduce the Semester System at the Higher Secondary Level from the Academic Session 2024-25 for Class XI and, subsequently from the Academic Session 2025-26 for Class XII.”
