The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has been granted its largest single donation ever, amounting to Rs. 228 Crore, by its Distinguished Alumnus Awardee, Dr. Krishna Chivukula, an MTech graduate from the class of 1970. This historic contribution is also one of the largest donations ever made to an educational institution in India.
The institute has designated an academic building the ‘Krishna Chivukula Block’ in honour of Dr. Chivukula, and a dedication ceremony took place on campus today, August 6. The generous donation will support a number of initiatives, including scholarships for international students, an undergraduate fellowship program for new IIT Madras students, a sports scholarship program, a Research Excellence Grant Program the creation of Shaastra Magazine, and the upkeep of the Krishna Chivukula Block, among others.
During a press conference, Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, expressed his gratitude, stating, “That our alumnus still remembers his Alma Mater after several decades reinforces the fact that education is the only immortal wealth that we can give to mankind. We are grateful to Shri Krishna Chivukula for his significant contribution, which will benefit several future generations of students in their pursuit of knowledge.”
“My education at IIT Madras was not only memorable and enjoyable but also enabled me to achieve much in life,” stated Dr. Chivukula, the founder and CEO of Indo-MIM, while discussing his inspirations. “It has put me in a position where I can give back to the Institute with one of the largest single donations to date to a university in India,” he added.
In 1997, Dr. Chivukula brought Metal Injection Moulding (MIM), a sophisticated engineered manufacturing method, to India. Accoring to a presser released by IIT Madars, his firm, INDO US MIM Tec, is currently a global leader in MIM technology, both in terms of capacity and sales, with a forecast revenue of approximately Rs 1,000 crore. In honour of his career prowess and community services, IIT Madras bestowed upon him the ‘Distinguished Alumnus Award’ in 2015.
