Candidates who have passed Class 12 or equivalent exam in the science stream in 2022, 2023, or 2024 are eligible to apply. The IAT acts as the gateway for admission to the five-year (dual degree) programme for science students and the four-year BS degree programme for engineering sciences and economic sciences (offered exclusively at IISER Bhopal).

The tentative total number of seats available for the BS-MS/BS programme is 1933. Seats are available under the BS/MS programme at IISER Berhampur, IISER Bhopal, IISER Kolkata, IISER Mohali, IISER Pune, IISER Tirupati, IISER Thiruvananthapuram, and under the BS programme at IISER Bhopal (Engineering Sciences) and IISER Bhopal (Economic Sciences).

There are, however, several routes to apply for admission to IISERs, including the State and Central Board (SCB), Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY), and Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced channels. The test is administered by the IISER for the SCB channel. Last year, around 34,751 applicants applied for IAT.
