Retrieving a lost ball while playing cricket. Where have we heard that before?

Gully cricket, check.  World cup, err, what?

Yup, that is exactly what transpired during Australia’s 2024 T20 World Cup opener against Oman in Barbados on Wednesday night.

After Oman batter Ayaan Khan sliced one past the wicketkeeper Matthew Wade for a four to fine leg region, the ball apparently got lost inside the advertising board.

Meanwhile, Australia started their campaign with a 39-run win over Oman. Put in to bat first, Australia made 164/5 riding on half-centuries from allrounder Marcus Stoinis and opener David Warner.

It wasn’t an easy pitch to bat on and Oman certainly didn’t lay down a red carpet for the Australia batters either.

Australia, a former world champions, lost their big-hitting troika of Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh and Glenn Maxwell cheaply.

However, Warner stayed put and played the role of an anchor to prevent the innings from a collapse. He stitched a century stand with Stoinis for the fourth wicket to help Australia to what turned out to be a winning total.

Warner made 56 off 51, an innings comprising six fours and a six.

On the other hand, Stoinis was at his aggressive best, belting an unbeaten 67 off 36 with the help of two fours and six sixes. For Oman, Mehran Khan took 2/38 from four overs while Kaleemullah and Bolal Khan chipped in with a wicket each.

Chasing 165, Oman never looked comfortable as they kept losing wickets regularly. Stoinis continued his stupendous show and took three wickets while Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa and Nathan Ellis took two wickets each to keep Oman to 125/9 in 20 overs.

The defeat was Oman’s second of the competition and they next face Scotland on Sunday. Australia will lock horns with England on Saturday in their second match of the tournament.
