Star England batter and former Test captain Joe Root will play for Paarl Royals in the third season of the SA20. The 33-year-old right-handed batter is the all-time leading run scorer for England in international cricket. In 345 matches played so far for England across formats, he has 19,355 runs to his name.
He was part of the Eoin Morgan-led side that finished as runners-up in the 2016 edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup played in India. In 32 T20Is, he has 893 runs to his name, which he has scored with a strike rate of 126.30.
“We all know what a phenomenal player Joe Root is, and to have him back at the Royals is a great feeling,” the Royals’ Director of Cricket, Kumar Sangakkara, said.
“He (Root) has been a great contributor to all the teams he has represented over the years and has also proven to be a valuable all-rounder with his bowling and fielding attributes. As we saw during IPL 2023 and have also seen over the years, he is also a great team man and has the ability to help his teammates develop both on and off the field. We are looking forward to using his expertise, his personality, his brains, and also his performances on the field to strive towards a successful SA20 season in 2025,” he added.
Root was part of the Rajasthan Royals team in IPL 2023 and got a chance to play in three matches for the Sanju Samson-led side. He, however, failed to make the most of the opportunities and was only able to score 10 runs.
Overall, the 33-year-old has featured in 105 T20s, having enjoyed stints in major franchise T20 leagues such as the Indian Premier League (Rajasthan Royals), Australia’s Big Bash (Sydney Thunder), and the ILT20 (Dubai Capitals).

The former England Test captain scored a century in the second innings of the second Test against the Windies in Nottingham on Sunday (July 21) to take his tally of triple-digit scores in Tests to 32.
