IPL 2024: Rohit Sharma's Unbeaten Ton Goes in Vain as CSK Register Thumping Away Win Over MI

MI opener Rohit Sharma scored a brilliant unbeaten ton, which ultimately went in vain, against holders CSK in the clash between the sides in the ongoing edition of the IPL at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday.

Chasing a total of 207, Rohit led the Mumbai charge with a breath-taking 105 off just 63 deliveries, but his incredible knock was in vain as CSK registered a 20-run win over MI.

CSK managed to put up a total of 206 batting first thanks to fifties from skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shivam Dube before a blazing MS Dhoni cameo helped the visitors put up the big score.

Ajinkya Rahane fell early in the innings as MI drew first blood against CSK as Gaikwad came in to bat with CSK at 8/1 in the second over. He managed a 52-run stand with Kiwi southpaw Rachin Ravindra before the latter fell for 21 off 16 to Shreyas Gopal.

Gaikwad notched up a 90-run partnership with Shivam Dube as the captain brought up his second half-century on the trot to help CSK to the 150-run mark before being sent back for 69 by counterpart Pandya.

Dube went on to remain unbeaten at 66 off just 38, while Daryl Mitchell came up with a 17-run contribution before some fireworks from Dhoni. The World Cup winner smashed a hattrick of sixers in the final over to end up unbeaten at 20 off just four deliveries.

MI started off at a break-neck pace as they raced to 70 for no loss in the first seven overs thanks to Rohit and Ishan Kishan. CSK pacer Matheesha Pathirana broke the opening stand with the scalp of Kishan, before sending Suryakumar Yadav back for a duck in the same over.

Tilak Verma was scalped for 31, while Hardik Pandya, Tim David and Romario Shepard went cheaply.

Rohit remained at the crease to bring up his ton in the final over, but it was too little too late for MI as the former skipper’s century went in vain.
